Quality of the food, service and the little extras
Having good food quality equates to your guests enjoying their meals more. If your family or friends have had good experience with certain caterers, look towards them for recommendations. If you have attended a wedding that used a particular caterer, look for little touches like: How was the food setup? Were there little touches that made the setup special? How did the food taste and was there enough to go around? If you liked what you saw, then you should pick up a business card so that you can enquire and hire the caterer for your wedding.

Variety of Food
Enquire on the type of food that is served by the caterer. You would want to ensure that it fits in with your wedding theme. Some of the caterers may have a standard food menu and you can select only from that menu.

While most caterers have the capability to prepare a food item out of their menu, it would still be wise to enquire if they can accomodate a special food request prior to signing on the dotted line.

Supplies by caterer
If the wedding caterer is not a contracted vendor by the venue, your caterer may need to supply linens, plates, glassware, tables, chairs, chair covers etc. They would also need to clean up after the event. Be sure to check if these form part of the contract.

Tasting Session
Select a caterer who has a tasting session. Or ask for one. You must taste the menu that you have selected. If you have not tasted the food prepared by the caterer there is no guarantee that you will be getting the required taste in the food prepared.

Value for Money, Within Your Budget
Decide how much you are setting aside to cater the food for your wedding, and then hire the wedding caterer that can provide the best value within your budget.

Finally, surf around and you will find reviews on various wedding websites. Learning from wedding couples who have hired wedding caterers can make your selection process a whole lot easier.
