First, you would need to appoint your bridal accessories designer. How do you decide which designer to go with? What qualities should he or she possess?

Customer focused
He or she must be able to listen to your ideas and grasp the style or the design you are after. “If you have a photo or a sketch of your gown, bring it along when you meet your wedding accessories designer.” says Ms Peg-gy Siew, jewellery designer and founder of Gilty Pleasures. This will help him or her to better visualize your gown design.

Creativity
Visualizing your gown design is not enough. Being able to create a design that will complement and accentuate your gown is essential. Ask to view his or her portfolio. This will assure you that you are in good hands.

Expertise
Your designer must know and be able to work with various materials. Ask to see the various types of materials that he or she works with. Find out more about which materials best suit your gown design, your complexion and the style of your wedding.

Good workmanship
Nothing could be more disappointing than having a badly produced piece of jewellery. Ask to see actual pieces of the accessories. Inspect the details. Be totally comfortable with the craftsmanship of the designer.

Price Range
Check with the designer on his or her price range. Make sure it fits comfortably within your budget. If it doesn’t, speak to the designer about your target price range. A good designer would also be able to recommend alternative materials to achieve a similar design within your budget. In general, be prepared to pay at least $200 for a set of simple and elegant pair of earrings and necklace. If you have selected more exquisite materials, then you would expect to pay a little more.

Lastly, custom jewellery are not created overnight. Be sure to cater sufficient time for designing and producing your pieces. Ms Peg-gy Siew advises: “The design process generally takes a little longer. Couples should ideally allow 3-4 months for the design and production of their accessories.”

Have fun and share with us how your custom made accessories turned out!
